Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others: 31st July 2023

My second lesson from the Raid Pyrenean ...

Jamie Cole

On day 1, I made several mistakes. I pushed hard to keep up with a group rather than saying: “can we just back the pace off a little” – worried how I would be perceived. I did not hydrate with something that replenished energy; today just water. I overheated – I wore a base layer which was too warm. And I did not eat enough at breakfast; worried about what others would think if I was late.

It reminded me of the airplane safety announcement “Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others”. I needed to make sure that I had focused on the goals I had set myself: to enjoy the company of those on the ride; to have fun and, if possible, to finish the challenge. This was much more important than worrying about what others may think of me.

This meant that I need to concentrate on my needs first - my ride and my capability; focus on those elements that were in my control to get the day done. Everything else would follow.

Amongst others I mainly cycled with
Robert Cole John Kellett Mike Phillips; and was expertly guided by Marmot Tours.
